The Five Elements

STORY OF THE FIVE ELEMENTS OF LIFE

The Five Elements, a view of matters in ancient China, is usually applied in philosophy, traditional Chinese medicine and divination.

Five Elements indicate: wood, fire, earth, metal and water, believing that the nature is consisted of those five elements. The nature will change along with the rise and fall of those five elements, not only influencing on men’s destinies, but also leading to the constant circulation of universal things.

The Five-element theory believes that the universe is consisted of the operation (movement) and change of five elements, wood, fire, earth, metal and water. It stresses the total concept and describes the structural relationship and movement mode of all matters. If Yin-yang theory is regarded as a theory of unity of oppositeness in ancient China, then Five-element theory shall be an originally ordinary system theory.

In the human body, just as a smaller universe, the heart, liver, spleen, lung and kidney are corresponding to the five elements in the nature. And traditional Chinese medicine even utilizes the Five-element theory to explain the internal structure of human body and the relationship between human body and environment, to complement the Yin-yang theory. Scholars of culture of health preserving in China have made a vivid comparison study based on the common natures of each element: heart (small intestine) is subsumed to fire; liver (gallbladder) to wood; spleen (stomach and pancreas) to earth, lung (large intestine) to metal and lung (bladder) to water; there is also the problem of mutual promotion and restraint among internal organs. Therefore, the relationship among five important internal organs of human body can be described as:
